BIRTH CONTROL Q & A
HOW DO I CHOOSE A BIRTH CONTROL METHOD?
There is no one size fits all with birth control. Thankfully, there are many different methods, medications, and tools that give women the freedom to select the birth control that fits their lifestyle best. Many women are nervous about selecting their birth control, and often express concern over how it might impact their body. If you have reservations about getting an implant, such as an IUD, taking a birth control pill might be an alternative that you are more comfortable with. Likewise, if you are not sure that taking a pill every day would be the best birth control method for you, discussing having an implant or another procedure with your doctor would be a great idea. Alternatively, Essure and Nexplanon are two solutions that are steadily growing in popularity.
WILL MY BIRTH CONTROL IMPACT FUTURE PREGNANCIES?
Just as with all medications and procedures, birth control does carry certain risks for each method—but they are very minimal. For most women, their selected method of birth control works very well and prevents them from having an unwanted pregnancy. When they are ready to become pregnant, stopping their birth control or visiting their doctor to have an implant removed normally results in conceiving shortly after. There are cases where birth control has influenced the hormonal balance of the body, or an implant has damaged the uterus, but these scenarios are rare. It is important to use your birth control exactly as directed and to visit your doctor at the first sign that something is not right.
